Deborah Dewey


Managing Member Deborah Dewey has experience in business management and economic development, including P+L responsibility for multi-functional operations with revenues from $2 million to over $500 million. She holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA. She was President of an unregulated power generator and was product General Manager of GE’s Large Electrical Generator business and its manufacturing operations with annual sales of over $500 million and a workforce of over 1,100. She has been a small business owner and has worked as a business consultant for large corporations and angel investor groups. She is certified in the Kauffman Foundation’s FastTrac programs, including Tech Ventures for technical startups.

Todd Mehringer


Todd Mehringer holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Dayton. He has held senior design and project lead engineering positions with Whirlpool, Honeywell, and Kimball Electronics Group. He currently leads a multi-disciplinary team of over 80 development engineers and safety, procurement, logistics and training professionals for the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane. He recently co-founded Variable Technology, a tech startup company providing engineering services and pursuing commercialization of innovative technology solutions.

Bret Mehringer


Bret Mehringer holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, an M.S. degree in Engineering Management form Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology; and a Certificate in Program Management from Villanova University. He has held positions of increasing responsibility with the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane including Technical Project Manager and Strategic Execution Lead for multi-functional teams. He holds multiple patents and has specific expertise in electro-optic and sensing systems. He recently co-founded Variable Technology.

Alexander Soles


Alexander Soles holds B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Technology from Michigan Technological University. He holds multiple patents and technical certifications. He is a Senior Electronics Design Engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center and Crane and was formerly an Electrical Development Engineer for GE Aviation. He is the founder/owner of Apogee Science, an engineering services company providing development design and testing of electronic prototypes.

Peter Avenatti


Peter Avenatti holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and has held design, production and quality engineering positions with Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation, Keihin Indiana Precision Technology, Baxter Pharmaceutical Solutions, and Science Applications International. He is currently designing integrated optic, sensor and power systems for the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane and has expertise in developing interface software for applications that communicate with external devices.


Somatic Systems, LLC was established in 2014 for the purpose of developing and commercializing a new product that will aid in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers (bed sores). “Proof of concept” has been achieved with construction of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and a provisional patent application has been submitted. The product provides continuous pressure and moisture mapping with integration to proprietary software that also records and tracks other patient-specific information linked to pressure ulcer risk assessment criteria. The technological innovations in design and material use will allow this first product to be produced at a cost that can make it available for use by all patients at risk for pressure ulcer development. Broader use and multiple applications of the technology are already being considered for introduction into other products and industries.
